I can’t believe it’s already the end of the first week of school! It’s great to be back!
At Harrison school, each junior high student (grades 6-8) has music class daily for one quarter. And, each grade level explores a different aspect of music through a standards-based curriculum.
6th graders study the basics of music through the guitar. Students learn to read standard music notation as well as tablature for simple melodies and accompaniments while studying classical guitar technique. Students also study world culture and music.
In 7th grade, students continue to study guitar, learning different chords which relate to the blues and jazz; two American-made art forms. Students also study musicals, learning how the genre was developed and what elements are needed to produce one.
8th grade students revisit the basic principals of musicianship and study the historical aspect of Western Music, including periods like the Baroque, Renaissance, Classical, Romantic and post-Romantic.
